Dr. habil. Ulrich Hoffmann, Switzerland
Dr. habil. Ulrich HOFFMANN is the senior trade policy adviser to the Director of the International Trade Division in the secretariat of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
He is the editor-in-chief of UNCTAD's annual Trade and Environment Review and the coordinator of the UN Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS), a new joint initiative of FAO, ITC, UNEP, UNIDO and UNCTAD.
Furthermore, Mr. Hoffmann has been a member of the steering group of the FAO/IFOAM/UNCTAD International Task Force on Harmonization and Equivalence in Organic Agriculture.
Dr. Hoffmann studied economics and commercial law in Berlin and had a chair on economics of developing countries before joining the United Nations secretariat. In the last few years, he has extensively published on various issues at the interface of trade, environment and sustainable development, including on the need for a fundamental transformation of agriculture to cope with the challenges of food security in a quickly warming climate. Also, Dr. Hoffmann has published some critical articles on demystifying green growth hopes in order to avoid self-deception and cherishing illusions.
