City of Bonn

18 United Nations organizations, including the Climate Secretariat, the Secretariat to Combat Desertification and the United Nations Volunteers programme, are working from Bonn for sustainable development worldwide.

Bonn stands for networks, dialogue and synergy effects. The United Nations, six federal ministries, scientific institutions, development services, businesses, the media and non-governmental organizations all have become committed components of the Bonn-based sustainability force field, but also the City of Bonn itself as the driving force behind many sustainability initiatives and forms of cooperation – from local to global, from on-site projects to education.

By hosting international conferences in Bonn, federal ministries, UN organizations and the state government have contributed to the fact that strong incentives for global development policies have come from Bonn and that the topic of sustainability has become deeply engrained in Bonn.

The City of Bonn is well aware of the significant role local action plays for global interrelations. Local projects like Ökoprofit or Sustainable Bonn, local climate protection, the advancement of renewable energies and fair trade are fine examples here. On an international scale, the City of Bonn advocates sustainable development in city networks and city partnerships and has successfully established development-oriented project partnerships with six cities on four continents: Bukhara (Uzbekistan), Cape Coast (Ghana), Chengdu (China), La Paz (Bolivia), Minsk (Belarus) and Ulan Bator (Mongolia).

Jürgen Nimptsch, mayor of the City of Bonn:

“After Rio +20, viable solutions are expected. We are pleased that SusCon is taking place here in Bonn, in a setting in which UN representatives, government officials, scientists, representatives from certification organizations, businesses and civil society can quickly come together and where the dialogue for sustainability is firmly anchored. A foreign delegate once named this field of force the “Bonn-Spirit”. I am confident that this is the ideal fertile soil for the successful implementation of the theme of the Conference “from intention to action."

The conference is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and the Minister for Federal Affairs, Europe and the Media of North Rhine-Westphalia:
